What’s Hot This Spring

Winter might be upon us but Spring 2014 is right around the corner! Bundled up in layers and winter jackets and dreaming about warm weather and spring sundresses? We’re here to show you some of the hottest trends for Spring 2014. You can start dreaming of warmer weather and start shopping for these fashion must haves.  Start packing up your winter clothes and start breaking out your fringe boots, colorful pastel sundresses and more! Pastels. We’re not talking about Miami Vice pastel suits when we talk about pastels. You can wear pastels on your fingers with a cute nail polish or as your favorite hair accessory to your favorite clutch. Don’t be afraid of venturing outside the box and wearing pastel colored pants, blouses or coats either. You can pair your favorite color pastel shirt (I’m a fan of mint green) with cute jeans. The sky’s the limit or should we say rainbow? Sweaters. In addition to the ever popular crop top (will they ever go out of style?) light knit sweaters are not going anywhere. It doesn’t matter if it’s loud prints or bold and pastel colors, they are easy to build into your spring wardrobe.   “Tuxedo-Meets-Althetic-Striped Trousers”. It might sound a little strange but according to Glamour they will be all the rage this spring. Glamour says “the athletic stripe smartens up with tuxedo detailing on these sporty-meets-sophisticated tailored trousers. It’s really all in the styling. To keep the look modern but refined, opt for a streamlined silhouette in unexpected white (black is so traditional) and pair the pants with a casual non-button-down top”. We think this is one of the most fun spring fashion trends. Coats, collarless coats that is. While the bright blue sky and the newly blooming flowers may trick you into thinking it’s summer outside, the weather can still be a more than brisk. Layer on the collarless coat. You can wear them in whatever color or print you like, sometimes the louder the better.  Fringe, everything. Sometimes fringe can borderline on the tacky side if overdone but this spring, all bets are off! Fringing can be seen on almost anything in spring, from evening dresses, to crop tops, to purses, to necklaces. Fringe is in and isn’t going to be going anywhere. If you want to start out small or aren’t into too much fringe, collect small pieces, like a purse or a clutch.  While these might be the “trendiest” Spring fashion trends, there’s always a little leeway in the fashion world. You can mix and match these looks to make these trends uniquely yours....

Bring the Spa to You

No time to go to the spa? No extra money to spend on spa treatments? We have good news! You can make your own at home spa treatments. With these 4 tips, tricks and recipe it will make you feel as good as new, at a fraction of the cost! Solution for Tired Feet – Soaking tired, dry feet in warm water will soften the soles and enable you to remove calluses much easier. Use a pumice stone or callus file for smoothing heels and other rough areas on your soles. A monthly treat for feet is made by combining 2 cups of each of the following: hot milk, mashed pineapple, and mashed papaya. Its best if each of the fruits used are fresh, as opposed to the canned variety. Apply this mix to feet and let set for 20 minutes before rinsing. Be sure to use a heavy moisturizing cream for feet after rinsing Scrumptious Face Scrub Banana Scrub 1 tablespoon oats (not instant) 1 teaspoon yogurt 1/2 banana Use a blender to grind the oats. Add the banana and yogurt and blend into a paste. Dampen your face with warm water and massage in the scrub. Leave on for one to three minutes. Rinse off with warm water. You can also use the scrub on your neck and your chest. This scrub with make all skin types glow. Treatment for Tired Eyes –  No one feels sexy with a set of puffy eyes. Cucumbers are commonly used to reduce puffiness, but red grapes work well too. Make sure the grapes are chilled, not frozen, and cut them in half. Apply the grape halves to puffy areas of the eyes after you’ve taken a warm shower. The warmth will open up the pores and allow the antioxidants from the grape halves to soak into the skin better. Lessen Cellulite –  No one is thrilled about the presence of cellulite and we all have at least a little bit. Reducing the appearance of cellulite is actually very easy. Take a handful of coffee grounds that have already been used to brew coffee and mix them with either a face mask formula or body cream designed for firming the skin. Make a past and rub it on the area with cellulite. Make circular motions and wrap the area in plastic wrap for a little bit of extra tightening. While this may not sound like a sexy spa secret, the outcome is very sexy indeed! I know from personal experience how important it is to make sure to pamper yourself. What could be better than getting spa secrets to use at...

Are You Eating Dangerous Chemicals?

Are You Eating Dangerous Chemicals?

Do you know what’s in your lipstick? Did you know that studies have found that many lipsticks contain harmful ingredients including lead? Some manufacturers list the ingredients in their lipstick but they aren’t required to by the federal government. Here’s a list of harmful ingredients you should avoid the next time you are looking for a new shade (you also might want to check your current lipsticks for these ingredients!) Ingredients to Avoid Parabens- On the label, long words with “paraben” in them, like methylparaben or propylparaben, indicate they are a member of the paraben family. According to Skin Deep, these chemicals can act as potential endocrine disruptors (they can mess with your hormones). Phthalates- Phthalates have been shown to damage the liver, kidneys, lungs and reproductive systems in laboratory animals. Phalates can be asbsorbed through the skin, which is worrisome since lipstick is easy to get in your system. Two commonly used types of phthalates found in cosmetics are butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP) and dibutyl phthalate (DBP). Oxybenzone- If a lipstick claims to protect your lips from the sun’s harmful rays, look out for Oxybenzone. It has been linked to allergies, hormone disruption, and cell damage, according to an Environmental Working Group Report. Fragrance- When listed on an ingredient list, this is a red flag. It can stand in for a number of chemicals, including phthalates. Lead- Unfortunately there is no way to know if your lipstick contains lead, which can occur naturally in some lipstick ingredients; exposure to lead can cause brain...

The Truth About Hair

The Truth About Hair

Do you wash your hair every day? We’re here to tell you why you shouldn’t. Not only is it not good for the health of your scalp and hair but it also can get expensive. Daily shampoo sessions aren’t always necessary and we have the scoop on why. Easier to Style. If you’ve ever washed your hair prior to going to the salon to get an updo or another more formal look, you likely got a talking-to from the stylist. Freshly washed and dried hair isn’t nearly as easy to work with as hair that was washed a day or two ago. Squeaky clean hair can slip out of pins and is notorious for not cooperating. Even creating a braided or more intricate look at home will be a lot easier to manage if you do it on a day you haven’t washed your hair. Your color will last longer. If you color your hair, whether it’s your whole head or just regular highlights, washing daily can dull your color and lead to more frequent trips to the salon. Keep your locks looking bright and freshly dyed by only washing every other day (or less if you possible). When you do wash your hair, do so with a shampoo formulated for color-treated hair so you ensure color doesn’t fade. Check out Ulta for some great shampoos for your hair. Be healthier. The more you wash your hair, the more you’re stripping your strands of their natural oils. That’s right — too much time with the shampoo bottle can actually mean less-than-lustrous locks. Over-washing can actually dry hair out, which isn’t ideal. Keep your hair healthy and looking their best by avoiding daily shampoo sessions. Save time. Washing and drying hair takes time — for those of us with long hair, a wash and blow dry session take a lot of time. By cutting back on styling time, you end up with more time to get ready, sleep in or even fit in a quick jog or trip to the gym (or just to linger over breakfast). Some Helpful Tips: If the thought of skipping a few shampoos a week freaks you out, there are a few things you can do to make life between washes a bit easier. Invest in some dry shampoo to revive yesterday’s style and stock up on hair accessories to give your locks a new look on days you don’t wash your hair. Also invest in a shower cap, so you can shower without getting your hair wet! By washing your hair every other day you can not only can save time, money, and energy but it’s actually better for you.  Use these...

Clean Out Your Make-Up Bag

Clean Out Your Make-Up Bag

Have you cleaned out your make up bag recently? Have you had a swatch of eye shadow since the 1990’s? Well like any other products, make up does have an expiration date. The FDA  does not require cosmetic companies to list the expiration dates on their beauty products, however a few companies do! Thanks to Blossy, we have a guide line for when it’s time to toss your make-up. If you use your make-up every day, you probably won’t get to the suggested expiration. However, it is very important to keep in mind the expiration dates of your makeup because it can cause some major problems. Expired makeup can cause infections, breakouts, pink eye, skin rash, and even skin sores.  It’s time to clean out your make-up bag and clean your brushes! Foundation.  3-6 months. Depending on the type of concealer you are using depends on the shelf life of the product. If you are using a wand concealer it can last for about 6 months however stick, twist-up tubes, or compact concealers can last up to 12 months. You should only keep these products for a maximum of one to two years. The reason you can keep these makeup products a little bit longer is because you are normally using make up brushes to apply these products which helps eliminate some bacteria. You still have to clean your make up brushes (check below for how often they have to be cleaned). Do not keep your mascara longer for 4 months! With the frequency this product is used and the close proximity of your eye, when used longer than 4 months it can cause pink eye and eye infections! Also do not pump your mascara (it exposes the mascara to air) but swirl your mascara instead. Nail polish should generally only be kept for 12 months. I know of many people that keep their nail polishes longer than that but the chemicals in the nail polish can cause skin damage if kept too long. Thanks to the ladies over at Blossy for the information on how long to keep make-up!  Watch the video below to learn about what you should toss and what you should keep! It’s a little long but it’s worth it!...
